Art as Therapy: What Happens When You Allow Yourself to Create Freely

There is something that happens when a person sits down to create… without pressure.

The Synergy Between Art and Healing: A Personal Journey

Art and healing are intertwined in profound ways, as both serve as channels for self-expression and transformation. When life feels overwhelming, art offers a safe space to explore emotions that words often fail to capture.

Personal Reflection:
My own journey has shown me how art can become a lifeline during times of pain and uncertainty. Through painting, drawing, and other creative practices, I discovered a way to process grief, confront my shadows, and reconnect with my inner strength. Each stroke of the brush or pencil became a step toward understanding myself and my experiences more deeply.

This synergy between art and healing is not limited to professional artists or therapists it’s accessible to anyone willing to explore their creativity. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned creator, art invites you to slow down, reflect, and rediscover joy in the act of making. This is the Power of the Arts!

I have seen it time and time again.

In my classes, there is often a moment at the beginning where hesitation lives. A quiet uncertainty. A question of “Am I doing this right?”

And then… something shifts.

The lines loosen.
The breath deepens.
The mind quiets.

And what begins to emerge is not just art,  but release.

Art, in its purest form, is not about perfection. It is not about performance. It is not about producing something worthy of approval.

It is about allowing.

Allowing yourself to move.
Allowing yourself to express.
Allowing yourself to be present with what is.

Some of the most meaningful moments I have witnessed are not when a piece is “completed,” but when a person realizes they are no longer judging themselves as they create. Although I have been a professional Visual Artist/Art Instructor for many years, I may also find myself struggling with self-judgment. Contemplating as to whether I’m doing a thing or two right when there is no right or wrong way when it comes to creative self-expression, sure, a better way, a more sophisticated, embellished way exists; however, this knowledge of the so-called experienced artist is not needed, especially not in today’s modern world. I am becoming more aware of how many people today are seeking more remedies, more ways to have an ease and flow life. Many of us are seeking ways to show up authentically, creating and developing a better mindset from the old traditional (BS) Belief Systems, and what I have discovered for myself and pass along to my clients, and students is that “our thoughts help to create our feelings/emotions, which help to create our actions/reactions, which gives us the results in our life.”

This is why I encourage exploration with artistic tools and not to focus primarily on what you’ve been told they are used for. I also encourage moments of doodling and abstract self expressism.

That is where the freedom lives.

Benefits of Integrating Creative Expression and Holistic Living

Establishing myself as a professional visual artist and certified Holistic Life Coach who practices what she speaks, I know the combination of art and holistic practices creates a nurturing environment for transformation. Here are some key benefits:

  1. Stress Reduction:
Engaging in creative activities activates the brain's reward system, reducing stress hormones and promoting relaxation.

  2. Emotional Release:
Art provides a nonverbal outlet for expressing and processing difficult emotions, helping to release emotional blockages.

  3. Improved Focus and Mindfulness:
Both art and practices like herbal tea rituals encourage mindfulness, helping you stay present and attuned to your thoughts and feelings.

  4. Enhanced Self-Awareness:
Through art, you can uncover hidden aspects of yourself, fostering deeper self-understanding and growth.

Connection to Nature and Spirit:
Integrating herbs and natural ingredients into your routine creates a bridge to the earth’s healing properties, grounding you while enhancing your creative flow.

If you’re into art as therapy and working on showing up for yourself and as your authentic self in the world, here are a couple of e-books that I, with care put together to help you find your pathway to healing and returning to awareness of wholeness.

How to Draw Like You

You do not need to be an artist to experience yourself as a creator. You only need to be willing.

If you feel called to create, I invite you to begin simply:

Take a sheet of paper.Choose a color.Make a mark.

And then… make another. Make your marks freely as if no one is watching. Make fast marks, slow marks, thick, skinny marks. Use paints, markers, pencils, crayons, or any tool that connects with your feelings at the moment. Don’t judge it, and just let it all flow. Choose any foundation to make your marks on, such as paper, cardboard, or anything that can absorb your marks.

No expectations.

There’s a lot of release in those marks and a lot about you within them.

No corrections.

Just presence.

You may be surprised at what begins to unfold.

With ease and flow,

~ Katie
