Collectors Don’t Just Buy Art. They Recognize Themselves in It
There is a quiet moment that happens before a piece of art is ever purchased.
It is not loud.
It is not logical.
And it certainly is not rushed.
It is a pause…
A feeling…
A recognition.
And in that moment, something unspoken occurs.
Because collectors don’t just buy art.
They recognize themselves in it.
Over the years, as both an artist and a guide to others finding their creative voice, I have come to understand something deeply human:
We are always seeking reflection.
Not perfection.
Not status.
Not even completion.
But reflection.
A mirror that does not judge…
A surface that lets us feel seen without having to explain why.
When someone stands before a piece of art and says,
“I don’t know why I love this… but I do,”
What they are truly saying is:
“This feels like me.”
Or perhaps even…
“This feels like a part of me I have not yet put into words.”
Art has a way of holding what we carry.
The joy.
The questions.
The memories.
The becoming.
And when you bring a piece into your space, you are not simply decorating a wall.
You are placing a presence.
A conversation.
A reminder.
A witness.
I often create from a place that is not always explainable in the moment.
Layers form.
Faces appear.
Energy settles into the canvas before I can fully name it.
And yet, when the work reaches someone else…
They see it.
They feel it.
They know.
This is why I believe collecting art is not about having all the answers.
It is about allowing yourself to respond honestly.
To trust what draws you in.
To honor what lingers.
To choose what feels like home… even before you understand why. Because the right piece will not ask you to justify it. It will simply meet you. And in that meeting, something beautiful happens. You are no longer just observing art. You are in relationship with it.
So if you find yourself drawn to a piece…
pause there for a moment.
Let yourself feel it.
Ask yourself, gently:
What is it about this that feels familiar?
What part of me does this reflect?
You may not always have the words.
But you will have the knowing.
And that…
is more than enough.
Closing:
If a piece within my collection has ever called to you in this way,
I welcome you to explore it more deeply.
Not as a purchase…
But as a possibility.
